You learn real quick to wipe off the drive spur and clean out the morse taper. If you get particles in the MT, you will get a bind, if you twist on the spur, you can gall the MT and/or spur depending on the material. One guy in our club had the same problem and ppunded on the spur for a couple of hours. Another club member came over and told him to pour vinegar down the shaft, he did and the drive fell out - might be work a try..

>If all else fails pack the drive spur in dry ice to shrink it down. The knock out bar I use is a trailer ball head welded to a rod. It works great due to the added umph of the ball weight.

Be patient and don't damage your machine.

I had the same thing happen to a brand new Jet mini-lathe. I was able to wack it out, but in the process I think the head got a little loose along its axis. Watch how hard you hit it.

Damage to bearings

>In reading these posts, I wonder if it might not be better to remove the spindle from the headstock before pounding too hard on the knockout bar. This might avoid damage to the bearings, and possibly cracking the headstock, throwing it out of alignment, etc.

>How about using a bearing puller. Grip the hand wheel and use a metal rod inside the headstock.
