2nd Annual Club Sale

>We just ended our 2nd annual club turned art sale and even though we had a lot more items and higher quality overall our sales were off a lot from last year. Is the econonomy that much worse? Sales were in 2 areas: very cheap and very high....nothing in between. What gives?

>I've done quite a few shows this past year. *ALL* have been down by at least 30% (and as much as 50%) from the previous year. I actualyl have a woman come back to my booth several times eyeing a $300 piece. On her final visit she commented that she couldn't quite justify spending that amount for her island house. If the well-to-do are not spending money, the rest certainly aren't.

>How the economy is depends on your income level. If you are making a lot of money (particularly from dividends), it is great, as your taxes have shrunk (is that a word?) dramatically. If you are making a median level or less, your discretionary level has dropped because of the increase in energy prices and health care costs. Plus there is the concern re outsourcing, the uncertainty of the war, and it is also an election year (adds to the uncertainty). And, oh yes, the equity in your house has also been close to tapped out.

So your comment re good sales of very expensive and very cheap items makes sense.

The level of sales has dropped dramatically for almost every craftsman that I have talked to, and that includes photographers, glass makers, etc..

>I was at a small local fair on Saturday. There were few vendors, and none were doing well. A friend who was there sold several pieces, mostly in the $20 range. I sold several pens, also in the $20 range. I don't think the rest of the vendors did that well.

We all know what is happening to the our economy. However, most of the time there is a rebound and the stores recover most, if not all, the earlier lost sales. Let us hope it will happen this year.

There is another fair to be held here in early December. I think I will do better then.
