>I built that years ago and I would do several things differently. The main one is to make the footprint bigger. Using the Delta 46-700 like I had when I built that stand, it wanted to rock real bad. I much wider footprint would make it more stable. it will still woble on that size lathe with a bowl becaus 500 rpm is the slowest speed.

I would also add as much weight as you can near the bottom. I would also add some spacer blocks between the lathe and the stand so you can put tools under the lathe. Other than that it was a pretty good stand.

>Did you see the stand that was the featured project in Shop Notes about 1 yr ago? It is designed for a midi lathe and either an extension bed or sharpening station. They also have variations shown for a full size. It is a neat system that you should have a look at, at least for ideas. Hope this helps!

>I happened to look in the "High Falutin'" circular this morning and the steel stand below was on sale and in stock at my local HF for only $30. Not that pretty, but functional. Turning on my justification mode, it probably makes sense in the long run anyway. I have a cheap clone that I will upgrade away from someday and if I wait to build a custom stand it will be tailored to that future lathe. This also means that I will be turning this week instead of building shop furniture. And there is no way I can build anything for $30 that will be as solid as a steel stand.

>I put the metal stand together in the matter of a few minutes. Since it isn't for my specific lathe, I mounted an oak plank to make a 1' x 5' table to put the lathe on. It is rock solid! It would make a nice mini worbench. I am making a shelf of 2" construction lumber that fits inside the lower supports to hold some additional ballast. For the sale price of $30, this was a heck of a deal. I spent another $10 on additional hardware and maybe $10 on lumber, so my total is close to $50.
