Curly Maple Ring Dish....

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Good Morning....

Here's another strange one from my lathe. I decided to call this one a ring dish. It just seemed suitable for that purpose. It's a nice piece of curly maple with a textured island in the middle where I attempted a finial. I'm hideous at turning finials and really need to attend the Wally Dickerman School of Fine Finials.

I also left the bottom with a rounded foot so that the dish can be rotated easily. It's about 7" diameter, Velvit Oil and buffed. I'm curious to what the feedback will be on this one. It's rather odd and I'm not sure what others will think of it. Sooooo.... let me know what you think.

Thanks for looking,

Jennifer

>Hi Jennifer,

I like the domed base, what a neat feature...almost like a big Ring Top...the finial looks good against the maple, a little more shaping on that and you'll be really hard to touch! The maple is wonderful, one of my favorite woods to turn...

Thanks for sharing,

Take care,

Jim

that's cute. I have a friend who makes a lot of what she calls ring dishes. She makes them out of one piece of wood and makes the finial taller. That seems like a waste of wood compared to your way but it's probably faster because you don't have to stop and turn a seperate finial.
