Foot Question for John Lucas

I posted a question on WOW about using a foot or not. I saw you mention in reference to Jennifer�s Purpleheart bowl you like a small foot on bowls, but it sounds like you view it extra labor on a utilitarian bowl. If I understand you correctly is this because the foot decreases stability on a utilitarian bowl or the lift is not worth the extra effort on a utilitarian bowl? I am having a hard time with a bowl foot and have resorted to drawings with and without at this time before I start turning which may help till I get more experience.

The only reason I said that I thought about not putting a foot on the bowl was that reverse turning the bowl is one more step that possibly could be eliminated. It doesn't take me long to reverse turn bowls but around here small ones don't see for much so I'm looking for labor saving reductions as well as material costs.

Terry Daniels does bowls with a dovetail foot and they look really nice. I've always shyed away from that because I felt like my bowls needed a foot of some sort.

The size of the foot does create more stability but on bowls in the 6" and under this doesn't seem to matter much unless the foot is really small.

I'm sure Russ or some of the ladies and gents could tell you more about foot size of larger utilitarian bowls, but I simply don't turn many of them. There's too much competition in that venue around here so I make wierd stuff instead.
