Purpleheart Bowl

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Happy Friday all,

Well here's another bowl from the bunch. It's only about 6" square and about 2" high.

I finished it with Velvit Oil and then buffed. I posted a question a week or so ago asking how to keep purpleheart purple....and after reading the responses, I remembered a box that I made about 5 years ago with some purple heart accents that I used the Velvit Oil on and those pieces have stayed vivid purple. So I went on my hunch and used it again. I hope this one stays as purple as it is now. This photo doesn't show how vivid it really is.

Thanks for looking.

>Jennifer, this is stunning. Can you suggest where I might find Velvit Oil? My wife loves this wood but when I said it will fade to brown, she said nevermind. So if there is a chance to keep it purple longer, I would like to surprise her.

I like the lip detail. What kind of foot did you put on it? I've been making these shapes and I've always put a little foot but I'm thinking about just creating a dovetail that fits my chuck and not doing a foot at all. I normally like little feet for the lift it gives a bowl but these are utilitarian and a little time savings in producing them might help the proffit end. That is assuming there actually is any proffit.

Pic of Foot...

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Hi John,

I always seem to struggle with my feet..it doesn't matter if I'm turning a bowl or dancing...ha! A lot of my bowls end up with what I think are not the right foot. Here's a picture of the bottom of the purpleherat bowl. I did a little bit of a recessed foot for something different. I actually kind of like this style but I think I may have left it a bit too tall. I'll include another view of the bowl so you can see what I'm talking about. Thanks for the comments!

I would agree I think the foot could be about half that high but that's just my eye. I've done my bottoms both ways. Recessed and/or continueing the curve of the outside through the bottom. If it's an art piece I usually continue the curve because those kind of people will see that and take notice. If it's for the masses I play with the bottom adding little details like your recess or texturing with the engraver, wood burner whatever. I find that the average person likes this and it takes it away from the factory made look.

>Very nicely done Jennifer. What is Velvit Oil or what are it's ingredients? It's not available here in Israel but perhaps there is something close. I make a lot in purpleheart and I'm always on the lookout for something to keep that purple. I don't know what it is but whenever I make something in purpleheart either the women snap it up or my wife/daughters/mother snap it up too. I'm very fortunate to have some nice purpleheart left but no new sources in site. I was dumb and told people where to buy it when they asked where I got mine. I went back for more and it was all gone. This is a top that I made and finished with friction polish. One year later and it's still purple.

Just a thought.

>The Hits just keep on coming...Jennifer!

You need to slow down a bit here , seems like an explosion of creativity has come over you...this one is also equallly as wonderful.

I like purpleheart, but never am able to keep the colour as intense as you have here. The simple ring around the bowl edge is something I really like about the top, it's simple yet defines the bowl...I like that!

Take care,

Jim

>Jennifer, that bowl is just plain elegant. I love the square contrasting with the round. Can you briefly describe how you made it? I would like to try something like this, but have no idea how to proceed.

I looked at all the pics you posted and, IMHO, the foot is just a tad too tall. I like the shape of it, but I feel it would be best about half it's height.

I have never tried purpleheart myself, but then, I'm still discovering domestic woods. Maybe someday I will venture into the world of exotics.

Velvit Oil sounds intreging. I'll have to check out the website.

Thanks for showing this piece.

>Hi Bob,

The bead for the foot is a great idea. It would have tied the two nicely. Thanks for the idea!
