A Pair Of Rattles

Dick Parr

>Our daughter had twin girls (8 weeks early) that are having some problems so I thought I would make a couple of rattles for them. Now that they are made, I realize they are to big, 5" long and 6-1/4" long. The biggest of the two girls is only 6 lbs 3 oz, it will be a year before they can pick them up, so it's back to the lathe to see if I can make some smaller ones. I finished them in walnut oil. I'll save this pair for back-up's for when they get bigger.

>Really nice job on the rattles. On the next pair, though, maybe you want to use another kind of finish, or no finish at all. You don't know if your new grandchildren have an allergy to nuts, and the rattles would be a rough way to find out.

>Also make sure thath the ends aren't too small so they can't get the rattles caught in their throats and choke. I think the gov't standards are 1 3/4" in diameter
