>Hey all,

I've posted here before but am still a turning wannabe. Fortunately, the steep slope of the learning curve is beginning to curve slightly in the right direction.

I've been playing around with some ancient doug fir barn beams, creating bowls and such. Though the wood is not the optimal turning material, to be able to say that the item turned is from an old barn beam is pretty cool. Especially when I can capture and retain some of the now ebonized nail holes.

After all that, here's my question. I'm running into a lot of small and not so small cracks. I'm not ready to give up on this stuff yet and am wondering what is the best glue (and brand) to bridge them and make the vessel sound. The largest of these is about 1/16".

Any advice from the experts is welcome.

>For filling a crack, glue is a poor agent.You really need some sort of filler. This can range from ground coffee to man made fillers such as micro baloons. For wood, I always stick with something like coffe grounds or wood dust.

I use anyting from CA to epoxy, again depending on the application.Epoxy is stonger if you have some sort of binderin it. If you use epoxy, it will not be cured for at least seven days.5 min doesn't count as it will always be a little soft and I never use it in turning.

In Mesquite I fill the crack with ground coffee and then use CA. For larger cracks I use an epoxy and coffe mix. CA is pretty poor in large cracks. If the crack is deep and I use epoxy I will put some in the crack and use a heat gun to thin it out and repeat filling/heating until the crack is filled. Let it cure for 5-7 days and turn.
