>I thought I would share a couple of pieces I've turned lately. This is my first ornament. It is made of Honduran Rosewood that was brought back from a mission trip (to Honduras of all places) and South Carolina Peach (from a local orchard). It's finished with a satin poly.

After looking at the pic for a little while, and wondering why it looks different from other ornaments, I think I have found the answer I was looking for !!!
See, most wood ornaments I have seen are kind of tall. The length of the finials is what makes them tall. While a tall ornament looks very elegant, I have been thinking about making some shorter ornaments, to give people a choice. But the finial was my stumbling block! Somehow shorter ornaments did not seem to have proper balance.
The ornament in your pic, however, seems to have very nice proportions !!! I think is the finial shape that made a difference.

Very nice....I've only ever made one of these ornaments and I struggled at it. Seemed like it took all day. I can appreciate the work that goes into them. I would love to get a system down so that it would be a speedier process for me. At the rate I go it would take me years to fill a tree!
