>Usually you would just carefully tap with the knockout bar from the handwheel side like you do to get a drive center out. I imagine you have already tried this though.Maybe with a softer rod like brass, so you don't damage the collet, you could "tap" a little harder. Good luck.

>I had a badly stuck MT awhile back. Tried banging on it, no luck, put in some penetrating oil, nothing, finally in desperation, I wraped the spur dive in cloth and gripped it with chanelocks and it twisted right out. Hope it works for you.

One thing about these is that it is very easy to overtighten it. Also, if you try to remove it with the regular knockout bar, it can and will damage the internal threads.

If this is the case, I would first apply some penetrating oil, and then screw in in the draw bar all the way, and back it about a turn. Then tap on the drabar with a mallet.

Compressing the expanding end of the collet with a vise grip can also help.

Got this from one of our club members who had a stuck drive on a large lathe. Beat on the thing for hours, another member came over and used the vinegar and the drive spur fell out.

>I use compression chuck a lot. To get them to hold on metal a fair amount of force is necessary. The draw bar sticks out past the hand wheel end about 2". To get them out I screw a threaded rod coupler nut half way on and hit it with a steel hammer. Make sure the draw bar is threaded into the collet at least 6 turns so it won't bugger up the threads.

These collets are intended for METAL work.

Collets are made to fit a work piece that is not too far off in size from the nominal size. That is, just a few thousands off. A 1/2" collet is probably about .504 or so when open, and will close only to about .496 or so.

Trying to compress a collet beyond its intended range will require too much force on the drawbar, and it will probably stick in the Morse taper. It could even damage the spindle's Morse taper.

I seldom use this type of collet for wood work anymore for the above reason.

>What nobody has mentioned is the sure way to break loose a stuck taper. Most of the time it can be easily broken by locking the spindle and twisting on whatever is stuck. If that doesn't work, give it a hit with a STEEL hammer while applying twisting pressure.

Then find out why it is stuck. The problem is usually rough machined surfaces on one or both parts of the taper. A good Morse Taper is a precision ground surface. A lot of our woodturning attachments aren't. Smooth out the rough ones with some sandpaper, used with oil lubricant.
