>got a set of thread turners and a video tape. Had no trouble making an inside (female) thread in a piece of cocobolo, but the outside one was a bummer. The inside teeth were set at a slight angle in the tool, so they spiraled in nicely. The outside ones in the tool were strictly vertical and all I got was a set of parallel grooves. They make a lovely design in the foot of a bowl, but how do I get them to spiral?

>I'm still trying to figure it out as well. Have the tools but no time to play. I'll be going to a demo with Bonnie Kline at the end of this month but she does it with her own jig I think. I'm also getting a video on hand chasing threads soon. If you have a turning club nearby they may have a video you could borrow or someone with experience to help you out.

It isn't automatic, so you will have to move the tool. With the lathe running slow enough that you can keep up with it, start the thread off the wood and move the tool at the rate of one thread pitch per revolution of the lathe.
Practice by making a line that is visible all the way around the piece of wood. Then make a few trial runs in the air to establish how fast to move the tool so that it advances 1 thread pitch per revolution of the wood. Now put the tool to the wood, and you should have a thread. You will be better able to follow the spiral line once that is established in the wood.
If it were easy, everybody would be doing it.

Anyway, it does make for neat decorations on the bowl foot.
