>Had a little block of maple and turned this small cup. I got this far and then couldn't decide whether or not to thin down the stem, and if I did, how much? My wife likes it the way it is, but my perception varies from time to time. I thought I would get the opinion of the experts here. Funny, the pics show a small area on the base to the left that appears to need sanding more. It isn't there in real life.

>Print the picture. Then draw in the lines and curvature of a smaller stem with a felt tip pen. You will have your answer without having to remove any wood.
Crop, cover, or cut off the waste-block in the print before making any decision on the stem; an advantage of a photo over looking at the real thing. Right now the waste-block has more influence on the my perception of the goblet than the goblet itself.

>I think it looks fine the way it is. It does look a bit chunky but it really depends on what you're shooting for that counts. For instance, I like my cups to have some substance to them. Others like the dainty ones. If it were me, I think I would lighten up the stem, raise the bottom of the cup ever so slightly and lower the top of the base very slightly too. It may only take just some good sanding to get it there.
