They cost a bit more, but the softer, more flexible bristles give you much better coverage and control. You can see examples of the finished items on my website.

I think I'll take your advice and ditch the paper towels. I have no idea why I ever started using the paper towels in the first place? Both of you are using the Chestnut dyes. I've never heard of them? Is there a reason you use this brand? Where do I buy them?

I also use the cheap foam brushes when I am using Aniline dyes.

I like them for a couple of reasons.. They are cheap and do a good job on laying down a nice even coat. The second reason is... they are cheap. :)

Cleanroom Swabs or cosmetic swabs

>Two years ago I picked up a bag of foam cleanroom swabs from the trash at work.( they had been opened during shipment and couldn't be used in the cleanroom.)

They came in a bag of 500 and have worked well for me in small stain, finish, and dye application jobs. They hold fluid well and are durable.

I just checked e-bay under swabs and there are several types available at, for now, reasonable prices. I've included a link to an e-bay ad for the type I have. There are also smaller ones listed elsewhere on e-bay. I hope this helps.

>I use the Chestnut dyes because they were recommended by my mentor. They work well, are alcohol based so they dry fast and they let the grain show through very well. Large bottles from Craft Supplies are about $10. They have black, blue, green, yellow and red and the colors can be mixed to create others. I used to use aniline dye, but the Chestnut stains are pre-mixed so it's just open the bottle and apply.
