>Is there a "standard" for monitor brightness/contrast that should/can be obtained before editing a photo on a PC? How about screen resolution?

Figuring that everyone has personal preferences for those two controls, as well as resolution, and that the photo I edit with my prefs may not match someone else's, the overall photo effect may be quite different from PC to PC.

If there were a way to normalize those factors for everyone at least there'd be a common starting point.

Just thinking out loud at 6:09am. Today is the first day of our fiscal year, and since I work in the CIO's office, it is literally New Year's Day around here, complete with office party, and nothing to do. September sucks here.

>I've often wondered that myself. Personally, I do not like ANY LCD panel for that very reason. The brightness varies depending on the angle you're viewing the screen and its different for everyone. With a CRT, brightness is the same no matter what angle its viewed.

This is a fair topic on photography forums. There are devices that help you adjust your monitor and printer for the most accurate color.

Crayons are a way to adjust monitors. Get the 8-pack of crayons that most every grade school child has and take a picture of them on a bright white background. You should now be able to adjust your monitor, printer and camera for the best match of color. A lot easier said than done, but at least you have a reference.

The issue becomes that not everyone wants to take that effort and many monitors and printers are unable to adjust to a match. If you are concerned that others are seeing the wrong color for your pictures then include a color reference picture (the crayons for example).

Mostly though you shouldn't worry about that which you can't control. Yea Mike I know that isn't in your nature.

I have been turning wood for about 12 years now. I consume about 20 hours a week in front of the lathe making primarly bowls and platters. I keep thinking about making other "stuff" on the lathe, and ocasionaly I even get beyond the thinking part. But I take the most pleasure in bowls and platters. I have most every tool availble for the lathe but I am always looking for a new tool. More than looking for a new tool I am looking for a new hunk of wood. While a corner woodworker (sometimes called flat woodworker) can never have enough clamps, I find most woodturners can never have enough turning stock. The woodturning club I belong to has a Christmas party each year and part of that party is a "grab bag". We bring in a turning, that is judged by the people who come to the party. The people who make the top three turnings get prizes (like sandpaper or a tool). The real prize though is the exchange of turnings that comes from this colection of turnings. Some of my most cherished turned objects are the ones I have recieved from these grab bags.

That is one of the most frustrating things for me also. We have our monitors calibrated here at work but I don't know why because you can go to any computer on campus and look up the image and it will be different on that monitor.
