Your previous post was about the Harbor Freight 2hp dust collector. I don't know about it. What I can say is that the most important issue is what goes into your lungs - that's why I'm getting a good personal respirator first. I'll get the cyclone as soon as I can afford it.

>I started out with Russ's most excellent idea for a dust hood. I have the 2hp Onedia with metal pipe running along the wall that my lathe is on. A box worked, but I needed the feed to come in at a different angel. Going back to the box idea, I took some large sheets of cardboard that some of my machinery came in and laid out a box with an angled side. Alond the way I had picked up a jumbo sized "scoop thingie" at a woodworking show. I beleive it was origianlly design for a radialarm saw, and came from Pennstate (I think). This became the angeled side of the box. I cut and folded the cardboard, and used some hot glue and duct tape to make a "custom" boxhood. A lot better than the ones you can buy.

When I went from a 16" to 24" lathe, I did the same thing - except I used the cardboard layout as a pattern and made one from plywood. I was happy with the design decided to commit it to ply. The advantage of the plywood hood is now I have a place to set my chuck key, something I got used to real quick. I also have a table behind my lathe which makes it real easy to place the dust hood.
