Vega 24 ?

24 for platters...

>having investigated further, I see that Vega says "up to 24" platter". That makes more sense with only a 3/4 hp motor. STILL INTERESTED IN READING OPINIONS IF ANYONE HAS USED THIS LATHE. Assuming you can make the lathe heavy/stable enough, what is everyone's opinion on spindle diameter and motor size required for larger work (yes, an open-ended quesiton purposefully)?

>Shawn, we have one at the communtiy college for larger platters. All of our student lathes are Jet mini's so it give them the flexibility to do larger work. It's not the 2400 by any stretch, but if you put it on a very stable base it is certainly serviceable for larger shallow bowls and platters. I have turned a 17 inch bowl on ours with no problem. My understanding from talking to Vega at IWF is that they are going to be upgrading the lathe. I'm pretty sure that one of the upgrades will be a removable tailstock and I'm thinking a bit larger motor. If you are in central NC, your welcome to come by and try ours out.

>For anyone interested in the Vega 24. Just got off the phone with Randy at Vega. He says he sold the last one on Friday and they aren't sure if they'll make any more. It'll either be another batch of them in November, a redesign (which would probably include a tailstock and maybe/maybe not a larger motor), or scrap the lathe entirely). Said he'll know after the middle of October.

>Some comments, it works good for a bowl lathe. I've turned 18+" in diameter without too many problems. The motor is whimpy, and it would be so much better with a tailstock. Other then that it's good. Let me know specific questions.
