Christmas gift number 4 (PICs)

>Looks like I'll have enough roughs that are dry for Christmas. Only need 4 more now and have a couple shelves full to choose from. (I can relax now) Been a productive weekend, finishing wise..

Poplar, from a huge tree in Southern Maryland, this is about 14" wide, 4" tall and just under 5/8" thick. Finished with beeswax and walnut oil (Mahoney's) There is a small foot to give it some lift. As always, comments welcomed.

>Hi Mike,

Nice looking bowl. Did the walnut oil give it a brownish tinge or did the wood have that before? I've just not seen poplar that dark. I've often avoided poplar because the colors I normally see in it are more of a white/green with occasional black streaks. Your brown looks great and if I could find poplar like that around here, I'd have to give it another try.

Thanks for the pics,

Mike

>Thanks Mike. This poplar has a lot of heartwood in it, and it was more brown than green. I wasn't really excited about the greens in it either but they changed color when the walnut oil/wax was applied. Mrs. Schwing really likes this one, even over the ambrosia bowl posted further down. Just goes to show you that we as turners don't always make the best judges.

I have enough of this tree left over to make a half dozen 20" bowls from. If'n you want I can send you a blank.
