Keep it on your list, and go check it out after a twister or blizzard has moved through the area. At that point, the owners may be quite appreciative of your efforts to memorialize their tree in a turned work of art. There are more than enough natural disasters, and manmade ones as well, to keep all the turners supplied with raw material, without the need to destroy healthy trees like these to get them.

>Talk to the owner. Looking at the burl I do not believe there is a very high chance of tree death by removal. When the tree is dormant remove the burl, not cutting to deep and dress the wound with a tree sealer. Just to be safe give the tree a good feeding of fertilizer.

Still, you never can tell who might be adversely influenced into doing something they might later regret, because they had not thought through the ethical issues. I'm willing to just discuss it as if it were a purely hypothetical issue.

Might be just the thing here..........toss that rope over the burl on a dark night.......a few pulls of the rope and voila, a nice burl comes crashing to the ground. And, a little alcohol certainly couldn't hurt as a lubricant.
