Rit Dye on Wood... It works nice..

>Rit clothing dye can be used for wood with very good results... It can be disolved in either water or denatured alcohol... obviously the water will raise the grain... We have been using Rit in the scrolling community for some time

Here are two Christmas Ornaments dyed with red rit dye...

The larger one is Maple and the smaller is aromatic cedar.. these were a test to see how the dye would take... the dye was disolved in denatured alcohol and did not raise the grain... Normally the part that is black would be done in gold paint to make it look like the brass part of a Christmas Tree light..

>That is a loaded question.. I mix it a little more concentrated than the package calls for because I want a deep color... you really need to experiment.. since the stuff is so cheap the worst case scenario you get too light a mix and have to add some more...

>Bill, I have never really thought of the sun fading aspect since I use it primarily for ornaments that don't get a lot of sunlight... the ones on my tree are 3 yrs old and just as bright as the day I made them... I use a lacquer friction finish on the turned ones and Deft spray laquer on the scrolled one...

But it will not penetrate very deep in the grain

But the Rit seems to be great for external dying.

Try using HOT water

>Soak the veneer 1st in plain hot water. Then mix the dye with hottest water you can get, short of boiling. Put in the veneer and keep the water hot for a couple hours. A slow boil won't hurt anything. Dry the veneer between newspaper and plywood plattens and a concrete block on top. Keep replacing the newspaper until it is no longer damp.

It may not be perfect, but it will be as good as you can get at home.

Unprinted newsprint is available as packing sheets from U-Haul and in rolls at Office Depot. No waste. It is reusable.
