Fun Day in the ER

I haven't had nearly as much fun since I jointed off the tip to my right fore finger a dozen years ago. I was coring out a wet cherry bowl and leading with my left. I seem to see better that way. When the core popped out, the parting tool jumped to fill the void and my left wrist moved against the sharp circumference of the 11 inch bowl. I squirted A+ all over. The damage could have been worse, and I am glad I had the lathe at the slowest speed, and was not leaning against the tool heavily. Not withstanding, the bowl ripped the wrist deeply, and severed a portion of the tendon sheath--no damage to the tendon. It took only 4 stitches, rather than a protracted operation. I am very enthusiastic at how nice the bowl looks all covered with blood. I carefully wiped the bloody bowl to get an even color and tone. Lots of lessons learned on this project.

Hello Everybody! I figure I've been hanging around WoodCentral for a few years now so I might as well officially post a Bio. I'm Jennifer and I reside in the heart of the Midwest in Indianapolis. You'll usually find me hanging out on the turning side of WoodCentral, but I check the Main forum too. I started woodworking about 25 years ago mostly interested in flatwork; small furniture and other items to use around the home. Then I discovered the lathe and became obsessed with it. I've been turning for about 23 years now. My love and excitement for turning has taken me into the world of teaching and frequent demonstrating. Lots of experimenting with textures, color, burning over the past several years. I've recently begun dabbling in metal clay work and have started incorporating it in to my turnings too. It's another toolbox full of toys! When I'm not turning, I'm hanging out with the love of my life and most honest critic, my husband Clay. In order to keep the lathe spinning and the lights on I spend the other part of my day at an ABC television station directing the evening newscasts.

I am glad to hear that things are not worse than they are, but really, aniline dyes work better than A+ for getting that red in the cherry to come out. You should have mentioned coring when you were up here the other day, and we could have done a demo for you!

Ouch! I've had a few small nicks from the sharp edges of bowls, but never anything like that!

I heard a story once, I'm not sure if it's true. In days gone by, during n the early years of this country, farmers would use blood as pigment for their paint. That's why barns are red.

I like the color of cherry to begin with, I don't think you should start coloring your bowls this way any more.

It seems that I keep learning that same lesson over and over on a lesser basis.Those sharp corners are the equivalent of a circular saw when it comes to flesh.
