Oneway Grinding Wheel Balancer

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Another question for the class please?

I'm trying to use my brand new Oneway wheel balancer for my Delta 8" VS grinder. I seem to be lacking in interpreting the instructions...or perhaps the instructions are lacking? It might be common sense....but does the side of the Oneway hub with the balancing screws go towards the inside or the outside of the wheel when mounting it? When I turn them towards the motor something rubs. when I turn them out I can't put the "tool less" wingnut thingy back on. Has anybody used the balancers with this grinder? This particular grinder has the "tool less" wheel changing wing nut thingy's holding the wheel on and they interfere with the balancing screws Oneway hubs. Do I need to just buy two nuts to hold the wheels on now? Seems like Oneway would have foreseen this trend in grinders and provided two nuts. Also the machined washer that fits into the recess in the hub....doesn't sit flush because the threaded side of the hub sits just a bit proud in the recess? Do I need the washer? What is it for?

Grinderless in Indy....

>Hi Jennifer,

I use the Oneway balancers with Delta grinders, but different models than yours, so my experience my not be quite on the mark for you.

Some comments on your questions:

" I seem to be lacking in interpreting the instructions...or perhaps the instructions are lacking?"

I think the instructions are very weak, essentially nonexistant, when it comes to centering the balancer on the shafts. Oneway not only needs to address this issue, but needs to supply some precision washers of various thicknesses to help one establish optimal centering of the wheel in the wheel housing.

" It might be common sense....but does the side of the Oneway hub with the balancing screws go towards the inside or the outside of the wheel when mounting it?"

It should go to the outside.

" When I turn them towards the motor something rubs. when I turn them out I can't put the "tool less" wingnut thingy back on."

This is because you need spacers to center the wheel/balancer hub assembly in the housing. These spacers should be precisely flat, just as the collars are.

"Has anybody used the balancers with this grinder?"

I have it on a cheap 6 inch HS Delta and an expensive 8 inch LS Delta, but haven't tried it on your grinder. Thus I can't say much about your wing nut attachement system, but that intermediary spacer collars should be able to work regardless of the locking mechanism.

" This particular grinder has the "tool less" wheel changing wing nut thingy's holding the wheel on and they interfere with the balancing screws Oneway hubs."

I suspect a smaller spacer collar will deal with this just fine. A precision washer or shim should work.

"Do I need to just buy two nuts to hold the wheels on now? Seems like Oneway would have foreseen this trend in grinders and provided two nuts."

I used precision washers I already had around, but I believe Oneway can supply these on request.

" Also the machined washer that fits into the recess in the hub....doesn't sit flush because the threaded side of the hub sits just a bit proud in the recess? Do I need the washer? What is it for?"

It is a hardened washer that won't gall when a nut is tightened against it. The hubs are only aluminum and would not hold up well to this. This is why the hardened washer sits proud of the aluminum hubs.

Hope this is at least somewhat helpful

>Hi Jennifer,

I have the full Wolverine kit including the balancing wheels on review here in the UK for the Creative Woodturning site, and as Lyn says the nuts go to the outside.

For me the balancers have turned a very cheap Clark 8" grinder into a pleasure to use. The wheels with their balancers fitted direct to the grinder without need for spacers or other adjustments.

>Lyn,

Thank you for taking the time to write this response. It was very helpful. I'll be calling Oneway this morning to see if they can supply the needed spacers and or washers.

Again thanks!

>The need for spacers is mostly limited to those rare grinders that come already with thick heavy collars, such as the 90 pound LS 8 inch Deltas. Whenever the original collars are thicker than the Oneway hub shoulders, some sort of spacer may become desirable as the narrower thickness of the Oneway hub shoulder may effect centering in the housing (and alignment with jigs already mounted). Of course, with respect to centering, this may become a problem when the Oneway hub has a lot thicker shoulders than the original collar. Then there is the other issue that Jennifer appears to have that the taller shoulders of the Oneway hub can interfere with some locking mechanisms.

The Oneway Balancers are a great device, but fitting them to a grinder is not always as simple as purchase and replace.

Also....

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>I just discovered that the Oneway "axle" is too large in diameter for the hole in the Delta wheels. When I purchased this grinder it came with one white wheel (60grit) and a gray wheel. I discarded the gray wheel and replaced it with a white 120 grit from Woodcraft and kept the other original Delta 60 grit. The Delta wheel will now have to be replaced because the hole is not big enough for the Oneway hub.

I did send Kevin at Oneway some pictures via e-mail of the hub and the issues I'm dealing with and he told me that they ordered this Delta 8" VS grinder to investigate as well. It should be there in a couple of days. So I'm looking forward to hearing what they say. In the mean time, I just bought some nuts to try.....otherwise I'll just put the grinder back as it was.

Thanks for all the responses here.

>Hi Jen:

For some reason Delta decided to use 8"x1"x5/8" wheels on that particular grinder, so you are correct that the One Way balancer hub will not fit inside the wheel.

Why they didn't stick with the 8x1x1 wheels is beyond me but you'll have to have them to use the ONe Way as you have concluded.

FYI -- it's very possible you will not need to balance the grey wheel. They don't seem to suffer the out of balance problems that the softer (white/blue) wheels do. I think it has something to do with more grit settling in the mold in one spot than another causing the out of balance problem. The last white wheel I ordered from Delta was so out of balance even the One Way balance hub would not bring it close enough for use, even on my slow speed grinder.

>Wow! Thanks Jennifer! I'm sorry you've had this experience, but really appreciate the blow by blow since it impacts me personally :)

The wheels that came with my VS Delta had plastic shims in the center to get them to fit on the shaft. If you take the plastic shim out, the inner diameter is still too small for the one way shaft? (Or did I completely read that post incorrect).

I'm also rather impressed that Oneway went through the trouble to buy a VS Delta just to check it out.

>Hi Jennifer,

Don't know if this will help, but the little plastic hub that is in the center of your Delta wheel comes out, leaving a larger hole.

I have the same grinder...hate it!

The VS is not as good as the 1800 rpm

TDaniel

>Tom, as you noted, the 8"VS is not even close to the standard 8" grinders. It is much lighter and much less of a grinder than the original 8" non variable speed grinders. I can not recommend this grinder for sharpening lathe tools. It will work but for the price there are better choices out there.

>Hi Tom,

Still not big enough.....I haven't been too impressed with this grinder either. I went from a 6" Craftsman.....to a Woodcraft 8" slow speed that was hideous out of the box. They changed the QC when they went from blue to white. Took it back and bought this one. A fine example of "you get what you pay". One of these days maybe Santa will drag a Baldor down my chimney : )

Works fine on mine...

Peter Teubel

>I also have a Delta 8" VS grinder (GR450). I have the Oneway balancer (new style) on it and it works just fine. I had to put the adjustment nut/weight thingies on the inboard side so the tool-less nuts would seat properly against the sholder. But other than that, it went one flawlessly. No rubbing, grinding, etc. I used two aftermarket wheels (pink & blue from Woodcraft), not the stock wheels that came with it (took those off immediately after I got it). Don't know if that would make a difference, but thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

>Peter:

Just for the fun of it, measure the hole in those original wheels and see if they are 5/8" or 1".

According to Delta's web site, the originals are 5/8 and cause you changed the wheels and new ones have 1" hole is why you didn't have the problem Jen is having.
