Lathe chuck?

I've got a Grizzly lathe, model 1067Z. It came with the standard drive center, and a 6 inch faceplate.

I've used it to turn chair legs and other spindley things. I've done some bowls using a center screw drive attached to the faceplate. It's a real pain to use.

Now I think I need a chuck to do the bowl stuff correctly.

Suggestions and recommendations, please.

>I like the Oneway Stronghold Chuck. I don't know if they make an adapter for the Grizzly though. Grizzly sells a chuck for your lathe - which is a place to start. Give Lee Valley a call, and see if they can help you.

A chuck is a nice tool to have for face turnings, but it will not make bowl turning more sucessful. Hands on training will make bowl turning more sucessful.

Once you can turn a bowl without a chuck then you will find a chuck a valuable tool for speeding the process and for saveing wood.

I have been turning wood for about 12 years now. I consume about 20 hours a week in front of the lathe making primarly bowls and platters. I keep thinking about making other "stuff" on the lathe, and ocasionaly I even get beyond the thinking part. But I take the most pleasure in bowls and platters. I have most every tool availble for the lathe but I am always looking for a new tool. More than looking for a new tool I am looking for a new hunk of wood. While a corner woodworker (sometimes called flat woodworker) can never have enough clamps, I find most woodturners can never have enough turning stock. The woodturning club I belong to has a Christmas party each year and part of that party is a "grab bag". We bring in a turning, that is judged by the people who come to the party. The people who make the top three turnings get prizes (like sandpaper or a tool). The real prize though is the exchange of turnings that comes from this colection of turnings. Some of my most cherished turned objects are the ones I have recieved from these grab bags.

>...Keep It Simple, Stupid. I think, at least for me, starting out with the same equipment I will use long term was the smart thing. Starting out with a chuck, rather than faceplates/waste blocks meant I only had to learn one way to turn bowls, rather than learn one way and have to relearn another way...I doubt I'm smart enough to keep two methods in my addled brain at once.

As for what chuck...I use Vicmarc VM100's. I love 'em and wouldn't use anything else.
