>Hello,

I tried a new twist on a standard slimline twist pen this morning and thought I�d share my results with you. This kit is the titanium Slim Twist pen kit from Lee Valley, I took the kit and on inspiration from some pens I have seen turned by Scott Greaves I replaced the center gold band with a wood band.


The woods are curly maple and a snake wood band.


The finish is a poly, wax, friction polish combination of applications.

This was fun, the opportunities to add some custom accent to a pen really expand with this process as well as the chance to use up all those small cuts offs I have been saving from previous pens.

I have an aversion to throwing out anything. Now you show me an other reason for hoarding small pieces of wood. Don't you have hockey practice or something else to do? Very nice looking pen. You mentioned using poly as part of your finish protocol. Where and how is poly used in the process?

Thanks for the kind words. I used some of my home made poly/oil mix, I wiped it on and turned it with the cloth I applied it with, then I let it sit for about 5 minutes and then I took some shavings and burnished the finish into the pen. Then I applied the brown and white Hut waxes and top coated with Mylands friction polish.

I found that Turner's Magic, gives me a nicer finish.. it is also a friction polish, but lacquer based.. so it might not work over your poly oil... but it works real nice over BLO which I use to pop the grain of my pens... I finish with some Renaissance wax and get a finish like glass..

Berea has it for only $4.00, but unfortunately will only ship in the States..

Just thought I'd give a variation on the theme. These are made with peach and this one is one of the first that I made like this. It uses a standard gold kit ($1.49)

Once I round the blanks, I square the middles then take the bushings from between the two pieces and turn my profile across the break. I use a wire to burnish the break in the pen and add one or two more bands above the break for decoration. I then finish the pen with a CA/Friction/Mylands coating.

Simple to make, quick, and finishes nicely while matching the grain pattern.
