>Ok guys and gals,

I need to tap your expertise. Last night the spindle that runs through the motor on my Nova Mercury lathe broke in half. It is only a 1/2hp dc motor (it is VS) and I do not think I stress the motor. But it broke just inside the motor housing on the internal side of the bearings.

My first concern is getting this lathe back up and running. What are my options? Can I order this part or do I need to replace the whole motor/controller unit?

Secondarily, what can cause this? Has anyone ever heard of this kind of thing?

I do have an email to the Teknatool service also with the same inquiries.

>I have read a number of posts over the last several years about the shafts on the Leeson motors breaking. If your lathe is still under warranty, get in touch with whomever sold it to you. You can also do a Google search to get information

>The shaft on my Nova 3K motor broke, and was replaced by Woodcraft. They recommended in the future to have 1/2 inch play in the belt. After doing this I have not had any problems.

>Same thing happened to me last year. Since it was less than 1 year old, I simply returned it to Woodcraft. Personally, I was almost grateful that it happened because the lack of power was really getting to me. Everything else about the lathe was great, but the motor was simply too weak (yes, it was the 1/2hp not the older 1/4hp).
