It is way to hard for me to apply a good finish on the inside of a semi-enclosed form. The lacquer tends to bounce around inside, and you end up with a very rough finish.

I sand the inside to 600 grit, and then wipe on a thin coat or two of lacquer to seal the inside (really necessary to keep out the water when I am wet sanding). So the inside is a smooth mat finish.

Most of the other wood, I only sort out defects (knots, etc) as I cut the segments. I like the natural random-ness of the wood grain to show through.

One question, what did you do to solidify the black plam? I've done a pen or two out of it. I like it, but have a hard time getting it "tight" enough to work as nicely as I like. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
