Sometimes I cannot use the tailstock to hold the workpiece while I tighten the chuck .... and this chuck needs two hands to tighten it.
Unless... see the attached pic. A magnet at the end of the spanner did the trick. The position can be reversed depending on whether on are tightening or loosening the chuch. I just epoxied the magnet at the end of the spanner.
A lot of beginners struggle with a chuck that operates with tommy bars -- the chuck is perfectly good, but only if you can lock the spindle. This is a great solution that changes the rules a bit.
Ron's suggestion will usually work just fine, but involves removing the chuck from the lathe, and there's no provision for checking how true the piece runs on the spindle, if that's an issue.
