I know just what you mean. When we were looking for our place, we finally gave up telling real estate agents what we wanted, and started looking on our own. If we saw a property that we liked, we called the listing agent. Of course, if it did not pan out, the agent du jour wanted to look for us. We respectfully declined, because in our experience, the agents NEVER sent us listing where we wanted to look or for the place we wanted to buy. One idiot sent us listings for over a YEAR for houses we could not afford in an area where we did not want to live, despite my calling her every single time a sheaf of papers arrived to tell her we were not interested.
SWMBO used realtor.com to find listings, and I would check them out on the ground. I would call the listing realtor and ask for the address to do a drive by. Most would accomodate us, although some would not. If they chose not to, we moved on. We eliminated a lot of close call places like that. We looked at a lot of run down dumps before we found this one! I tell people we wanted someplace that was neglected and run down, and boy did we get what we wanted! On the plus side my neighbors all around paid two to five times what I did for smaller properties. I am the current slum, but that is changing slowly but surely.
