Newbee Advice Please

>I have been 'lumbered' with a (Heavy)log cut into 6 pieces each 12"X12" Bark is smoothish silvery to bronze. Lightish wood but no real discernable difference between sap and heartwood, but some patterning radiating out from the heart throughout the entire length. Also what appears to be some blue/green staining is becoming noticable across the cut surfaces. The tree was cut down 2 1/2 years ago and stored in a timber outbuilding. I am informed it is Holly ... ??

If I mount the prepared blank as I would normally do Grain perpendicular to the Lathe bed I will lose most if not all of the patterning. I do not have the tooling nor the experience to go for hollow forms. Please ...any ideas or advice.

As it gets older it seemed to change colour - sort of a soft pinky brown. It turns well and sands to a great finish not much grain, but the colour is not bad.

I have some box blanks drying in the woodshed, to see how they go. They turned green in colour. I'll see how they turn out. When I split the blanks out of the log, the wood turned colour right away - grey, green, even purple...

I also have 4 I put in the freezer - somone said freezing stops it changing colour.

>I'd say holly is a good guess. Bark characterstics match the holly I've got. Mine is also stained -- blues and greens, though it varies from log to log. Seems to be post-cutting, as the fresh wood inside is usually pure white.

Some 4-5 yr old branches I've turned are very different in color. A light brown with a lot of variation, not the pure white. Kind of pretty.

I've found it to be fine grained and take a finish very well. The wet wood I turned warped pretty good. A few splits opened up on a few bowls, then closed themselves later on.
