>Bill, I'd be concerned with the 50 Amp draw on your battery. Back when I was four wheeling, it was not unusual to use a second alternator for the extra off-road lights. Probally best to ask a battery shop, maybe a higher output alternator, second battery?

I'm with you, Bill. If someone close to a HF store could check it out (and return it easily if its a POS), that would be the way to go. I'd hate to get the thing and have to pay for return shipping if it was junk.

At the Picnic you saw the mini-crane on my trailer that I got from them. That works quite well for putting large log bolts in the trailer without chiropractic help or surgical repairs. It would also be simple to replace the hand winch with a 12v one.

You do know there's a HF store right at your end of Allentown where you can go look, right?

I would run if with the truck running for a couple of days to see if it functions ok and then look at the second alternator option. Also watch the weight limit on the lift, it might state one level and really be capable of another, not so out of line for HF, so I would push the weight limit on it to see if it was all it was cracked up to be. Crane on Bed Extender

>Was kinda suprised to see that crane on a trailer when I got to the picnic. I had just picked up the same HF crane and was figuring on mounting it on a pickup bed extender with a couple of adjustable support legs.

I've already cut the extender length down, just enough to clear when tailgate is down. Then I was going to bolt the cut off section as a tee for the support legs. I'd use 2" angle iron welded to the extender and on the bolted cut off section for mounting the crane. Luckily the crane post is open at the bottom and can fit over the upright stub of the extender.

In essence, it's about what Al Crandall described a few months back. All I need is to clear out the garage for working space.

That trailer was actually built on the bones of 3/4 ton pick-up. If you're going to be lifting real weight with your crane, I strongly suggest that you tie your mounting to the truck's frame lest you wind up with a bent-up bed box.

This might be the time to persuade her that she will not have to help me grunt rounds into the truck if she lets me buy this thing, and a tree like this would be a good test.

Mark, I remember your lift, and Al Krandall has one like it on his truck. I like the design of this thing because it does not occlude the bed or cause me to fear dropping a log from a fairly good height and glancing it along the side of the truck, or worse, the side of the driver! Also, it comes out of the way, or off the truck fairly easily by the looks of it.
