Had tons of fun with those for over 3 years until I had saved enough to get a nice new Jet 1642 a couple months ago. I also picked up an extra Jet mini with the bed extension while they were on sale at Amazon just in case my original decides to fail at some inopportune moment (doubtful though). Can you have too many tools? Dumb question, I know.

>No, I did the other direction. Had a ShopSmith and decided I wanted a smaller lathe to do pens on. Got my Mercury for the pens but now do most of my bowls on it instead of setting up the ShopSmith. Just isn't much comparison between the enjoyment levels of the two. The ShopSmith was great until I got used to a quiet machine that was made to turn and one that is loud and not made for anythins specificly. Working on the third one which will swing a 30" bowl. Now that'll be different!

Then I bought an old Delta (a bug hunk of iron) variable speed, gap bed that one of the local high schools put up for auction. Then in March, 2004 I bought a PM3520a and a month later sold the Delta 46-700. I have a small shop so the PM3520 and the Jet mini are in use but the "Big Iron" Delta is sitting in the garage and when I get the garage cleaned up enough to get to it, it is going out the door.

I missed having a portable lathe so much that a few months later bought the Teknatool 1/2 hp Mercury. At the time I was coordinating small group sessions for our local club so a portable was much needed.

There are times I think of selling the Mercury but quickly throw out that idea.

I currently only have one lathe - a cheap Asian mini. I hope to get a nicer one early next year and buck the trend by making it a replacement.

My first lathe was an old Sears 1236 I bought two years ago at an auction in order to learn the craft. I left it in my shop when I separated from my ex-wife and bought myself a new Jet Mini VS last February. I love it. It fits in my apartment and is easy to move around if need be. It will probably be the last lathe I buy as I doubt I will every have a "shop" again.
