today was labor day, on the buffing wheel

>I appear to be in a contest with that other guy from Maryland, Tom Mullane in Hagerstown, to see who can post the most new work!

I literally have spent the entire day, save for exercise and walking the dogs, in the shop, sanding and buffing, sanding and buffing. Finished up a bunch of work, feels good. Done for the day, here's the last one I worked on. 5" wide maple burl, ebony collar.

Oops, I lied. I roughed out a big cherry form after taking a pic of my rig for Loose Tenon.

Well Done....

>A very nice form, one I seem to be familiar with. Mike you posted a piece last week that had very thin walls. Are you doing that with most of your work? I became fascinated with thin walled pieces many years ago, and just about all of my pieces are thin walled. Nothing very special, just what I like to do.

>Thank you sir. You know that yours is one of the most valued opinions for me, since your forms provide most of my inspiration. I'm trying to "find my own signature work" but everything I turn seems to wind up this same basic shape.

What is meant by thin? Certainly the one last week with the 1/16" walls was thin, but would you consider this one with 1/8" walls thin, too? I wouldn't say I'm fascinated by really thin work, and wouldn't have done that one so thin if it didn't have so many openings in it, but 1/8" doesn't seem to be too terribly difficult to achieve, and I'd consider it thin, yet it still provides strength.

Thanks again. One day my work will look like "mine" but practicing with yours is certainly helping build my skill set.

Well done piece. I'm glad your posting photos. I had to work a ball game Saturday, Soccer on Sunday and have to shoot the group shot and head shots for the basketball team brochure tonight. Some labor day. I did get in 40 miles on the bike on Saturday before the game.

I did managed to turn my latest items that you all will see later in the week when I get them painted and photographed.

Your photos are looking great. I'd like to make a suggestion to try. Place some black paper or cardboard over the outer edges of your top panel. This will change the shape of the top highlight. You can play with this forever. it does change how much light bounces back in the bottom so on some pieces it won't work. You can also feather the edge of the highlight if you want by putting torn edges on the black paper. The idea is to get the highlight to be less obnoxious. You need the highlight. That's what shows the wonderful finish you've achieved but you can play with the shape and size of the highlight to see if you can improve the photo.

Now If I can just figure out to photograph how thin the walls are. Keep up the good work.
