>Ron, I don't know about the acetone but this might be a way to test my idea about dry ice. After a recent chat session I tried to do some Google research on non-chemical ways to kill the critters. Just about eveything I read talked about oxygen / low atmoshphere plus cold for eggs. I got to thinking about sealing the blank in a cooler with a large chunk of dry ice. I think the dry ice would take care of any oxygen but I don't know if it would drop the temp enough for any eggs. I would have to drive into Dallas for dry ice so I haven't tried it yet.

On the other hand I usually turn Mesquite to a finished size and then microwave it. If you do it this way be sure to wear a facemask to catch the splatters.

I just cut the log open and the critters seemed to have died with a smile on thier faces. I'll leave everything in the bas over night - Just in case!

Never have done it was just thinking, would the wood suffer much. if it were sealed from extra moisture except what was in the bag its sealed in. Just thinking

>Some bugs can live thru the deep freeze(they live thru 20+ below here every year).What kills these guys is the dehydration you get with the frost free feature.What you`re actually doing is freeze drying them,so a bag will stop this effect.

As a bonus,I`ve found that freezing seems to tame some real problem woods like lilac and apple.I`ve had far less cracking and distortion after freezing.

>Living in Texas, I turn a lot of mesquite. When I have a piece that has some livestock roaming through it, I place it in a plastic garbage bag. I the take a cap full (cap from a can of spray paint) of moth balls and place in the bag and seal it up. After a few days the munching is gone and so is the livestock. I normally leave it in the bag until I need it.

Some of my club members have soaked the wood/piece in paint thinner, others just turn the piece and microwave to kill any larve.
