>Thanks Jim. Nope, no dye, the wood actually has that pinkish color to it. A bit of it might be in the photo but Mrs. Schwingding asked the same question upon seeing it emerge from the basement.

This wood was taken from the very base of a silver maple that was about 40" across.

I expect soon to be turning nothing but maple burl. I have a large shipment coming from Oregon in a few weeks that should keep me busy for 6-8 months, but I won't let the good log dump stuff go to waste.

>Here is a shot of my lathe with the hollowing rig attached. It is the commercially available Kelton system with the laser guide. I love this thing, but have no other system to compare it with. You can just barely see the laser dot in this pic. I'll hollow this cherry form out to about an inch and, wax it and let it dry before finish turning.

I use the tripoli compound because I find it forces the white diamond to do less work, and doesn't give me the chance to burn/melt the lacquer as occurs if I keep the wheels in contact with the work for too long. My approach with the tripoli is pretty much just to hit the form with whisper soft, and very quick passes on the wheel. Just enough to remove the sanding marks, more of just "scaring the form" by showing it the tripoli wheel.

BTW, I have the "cutting board" blank cut and glued up with a waste block, ready to turn. I just have to find the opportunity to turn it. I was going sto give it a go this past weekend, but I've got a sacroiliac (sp?) issue that is going to keep me off the lathe until I can get it straigtened out.
