I always wear a dust mask anyway to prevent breathing the ambient dust. Overhead collectors work away from the source and the air movement created by them just stirs up more dust. That's why I always wear a dust mask. By the way, do you know of a high quality 1 micron dust mask?

Problem with all masks is that they are immediately rendered useless when you take them off and breath the air in your shop.

I use a JDS overhead filter. It is the 750 model. It works for me. I can leave it on low when I am not making dust and it cleans the air. When I put it on high it changes the air in the shop about 20 times an hour.

All I have to do is look at the filter inside to see how well it works.

I really belive dust collection is the only effective strategy, and that air filters are a gimic or at best of very marginal value.
