I don't know if this is what you had in mind when you talked about twisted wood on a lamp. These are wine stoppers with veneer laminated in between. The twisting depends on the angle the blank is cut and the design of the turning. The closer the turning cuts get to being parallel with the veneer the more the design comes through as a twist or circle.
