To make one nested in a small bowl, just start out with a larger hunk of wood, create the goblet, then carefully turn the wood away to leave a stem surrounded by a small bowl. Making the bowl in a good, fine-grained hardwood in endgrain orientation will be easiest with a hook tool or ring tool -- or careful control cutting the inside of the bowl from the center outward with a small bowl gouge.

Another option is to make the goblet and bowl as separate pieces, with a snug fitting tennon, and then glue them together.

>What about a two piece solution? Turn the bowl and cut a recess that will hold the base of the egg cup stable. That way you could use flat stock the bowl and not need quite as big a piece to start with.

Turn a cylinder that is large enough to contain the two egg cups. Then mark the centers of the cups and turn the hollows off center. Once they are complete remount the piece between centers and finish the outside. It would be much easier to convince them eggs over easy taste better.

I'll try it on Saturday and let you know the result. About the over easy... here's me, new lathe, Vicmarc 175, just done an intensive one on one four day course and think I can turn anything...if only...
