Finally Got a lathe!

>After much agonizing, searching, hemming and hawing, I saw a good deal and picked up a used but in pristine condition Atlas Craftsman 12x36"!
I know some of you here had/have/started with this lathe....so what did you guys do for a banjo rest?
Also, on this type of lathe, what's most efficient practice for dealing with the wood shaving/metal shaving/cutting lube abrasive paste on your ways issue?
