My Vicmarc VL-100 Update

David Wheeler

>Im pleased to report that last week Greg Jensen delivered and setup my new replacement VL-100 from Vicmarc. However I needed the few days I had at the IWF to arrange my thoughts on this post. So here they are.

1. Greg was very professional and thorough. He arrived at my shop; took a quick look at the VL-100 he was replacing; quickly discerned that the bearings were shot and the spindle perhaps was bent.

2. He brought in a fully tested and setup VL-100 and graciously spent 2 hours with me turning and visiting.

3. The lathe is everything it is supposed to be. My research before and since still tells me that the VL-100 is probably the Cadillac of mini-lathes.

The WC group was helpful to me before my initial purchase; and throughout my whole experience with getting it replaced. Identifying with fair-minded and knowledgeable folks on related user groups is such an asset. To all of you, a hugeacious thank you.

I hate putting a but in here; but I dont know what else to say. In my last conversation with Vic he was clear that he felt it was a mistake on my part in going public on WC. In all fairness to Vicmarc it is probably true that uniformed or malicious-minded hot-heads have misused such forums to ill effects. But the forums I participate in (MiniMax, Felder, WoodWeb, WC, Knots, and a few others) seem to be fairly well moderated with informed users. I really dont see that much abuse; but Im not on the unmoderated news groups.

In my case, I think the thread about my lathe was fair. I had NO interest in bashing Vicmarc or Terry; and I didnt detect any bashing motives in the posts. In fact many acknowledged similar and other problems but still recommended the Vicmarc line. Owning and running businesses myself it sure seemed to me that Vic could have and should have used my situation for a positive spin on service and support.

Getting a quality product with the service and support accompanying it is the interest of the user. Savvy businessmen know the struggles that go on behind closed doors to get that accomplished, but it really doesnt need to be made public. I was uncomfortable when my thread headed that direction. Regardless, I still think decorum dominated the discussion.

While I was at the IWF I met a fellow FOG (Felder owners group) member. I was telling him about my lathe experience. When I finished, he said, Let me tell you about my experience with my lathe (Oneway). He has had it for a while and it was out of warranty. And recently it tripped off and would not run in the middle of a job. He called and they walked him through the fix. Turned out Oneway had placed a small trip unit in the lathe that wasnt necessary and no longer designed in the lathe. During the conversation the user indicated that he wanted to purchase any items that could bring his job to a halt. Overnight they shipped him the items he wanted; plus a new switch, even though they fixed the old one; all at no charge. He was amazed. He was more than willing to pay for the support and any of the other stuff.

No more commentary is really needed. However I realize this is just one mans story and doesnt speak for all of Oneway; any more than my experience speaks for all of Vicmarc. I only wish I could tell my story the way he did, though.

Again, thanks to all here for your help to me.

>David: Which VL 100 did you get? Was it the bare bones, no motor model, or the factory installed, VS model with the motor under the lathe bed inside the tin box, or is it the newest VS model with the factory installed motor mounted to the left of the bed ( in the open)?

Thanks Edward

>Hi David,

First, I'm glad it worked out for you and I hope you enjoy your VL100 at least as much as I do.

I have no doubt in my mind you did the right thing. You presented your problem fairly and it came across that way. Don't let Vic scare you and don't give it another thought! They had the opportunity to rectify your problem and didn't. Heck they had a second chance with their response and they blew that, too. They left you with no alternative. Terry wasn't bashed at all. In fact his integrity was only fortified.

Vic and the management at Vicmarc really need to restructure their organization and develop a much better or should a say a basic / decent liason with customers. They have an excellent product but with little or no support.

While Oneway has an excellent reputation, it's always easy to do that when your profit is high. My price list from Vicmarc is still from 2002 and with no changes due to the shipping costs and the strengthening of the Aus. dollar. When I was selling computers and setting up networks and the prices and profits were high, I could give golden service. Now that computer prices have hit ground level, the service and quality is the same. I left the business. I don;t know what your business is but I'm sure if your manpower was busy tending to service for free while your profit margin was low, you'd honor your customers but shortly there afterwards look for an alternative. The price of a Vicmarc lathe here to the end user is prohibitive and sales are in line with that.

I will continue to sell and represent Vicmarc in Israel as I know their products are excellent. Should their quality ever drop, I'm out.

>I sent a long and,I thought, carefully worded e-mail to Vic stating my thoughts on your problem and how in my estimation he was missing an opportunity to turn things around.I also mentioned that his products were top quality and it was a shame they were being damaged by less than adequate crating.

I have yet to hear back from anyone.Seems he listens to his customers about as much as his dealers.

>Edward,

My VL-100 looks like exactly like the one on the Vicmarc Page (http://www.vicmarc.com/lathes.html). If there is another model of a mini lathe I'm not aware of it. It is a factory installed motor with VFD in the box, as you say.

>David; There is a new(er) VL100 with the Factory installed motor installed to the left of the headstock, out side the footprint of the lathe. The motor is out in the open, better cooling??? The lathe bed is supported on two cast iron base assemblies at each end of the lathe; the base at the headstock end is the larger of the two. Electronics are housed in a rectangular box mounted between the base supports mentioned above. This model is pictured in the magazine "Australian Wood Review" issue #40, which I bought at Chapters a while ago. Issue #41 must be due out soon. I saw this lathe in a store in Calgary, Canada ( Black Forrest Wood Products), last March, so it has been produced and shipped out The store had both VL 100 models in stock.

>Don't take this as gospel, but somewhere I heard that Vicmarc had changed the style of bearings. Obviously a few other things may have been modified as well, as you noted.

>This is the model I have. I guess the US is clearing up old stock. I was actually looking foward to their earlier model with the drawer.

>Vicmarc designed a new stand for the VL100 a while back. It consists of two cast iorn legs like discribed in your post. Distributors seems to like the old drawer style better than the new one so they keep ordering the drawer style. So some will have the new leg style and some the drawer style.

The bearing were changed to a tapered roller bearing around 2 1/2 years ago. Previous versions had ball bearings
