bowl turning

>Just started this as a hobby and am getting addicted, and frustrated. Question 1. How do I get the inside of bowl to come out like the outside. I alwas end up with groves. Question 2. When turning a bowl the end grain alwas seems to pull out instead of cutting or shaving off. Chisels not sharp, wrong speed? Help before the fire wood pile gets to big !!

>JB, been there, done that. The best advice I can give you is to take a lesson from a good instructor who can see what you are doing wrong and put you on the right path. Whether this instructor is a member of your club or a paid instructor is not important, just get someone who is qualified to help you over this hump. Obviously you are doing something wrong but there are so many possibilities that only a person looking over your shoulder will be able to give advice that would be meaningful.

>I am partial to the Richard Raffin "Turning Wood" video/DVD. I also found the Dell Stubs video a very good experience. The Ellsworth video/DVD on the "Signature Gouge" is the best one going for using that type of grind.
Another good DVD is the Stuart Batty/Mike Mahoney DVD - "Two Ways to Make a Bowl". But, remember that Mike is left handed. All are good videos to get you started. I made my first bowl after watching the Raffin tape. I learned how to use the "side grind" after watching the Ellsworth tape. And I have learned a lot from watching the rest.
But is also helps to have had handson workshops with both Raffin and Batty. That is where you quickly learn a lot of the little tool techniques - whether you want to or not...
