What size scraper?

>I am thinking about buying a scraper. What is a good size for general usage? I'm not a bowl guy, so it will be just for the occasional usage. Also, what's a reasonable brand? Thanks for the help.

>Depneds on your usage. If its for small endgrain boxes, thats one size for boxes and bowls another. I do a lot of spindle type boxes and toothpick holders. The scraper I use most is a 3/4" "Raffin" stype scraper. Its rounded and ground up the left side. I also use it on bowls. I also use 1/2" and 3/4" square end scrapers on some of the boxes when I want a flat bottom.
I have a couple of scrapers I made from 1" skew chisels. They have a 45 degree bevel and slightly radiused. This came about as a result of a hands on workshop with Raffin. I use these for shear scraping the outside of bowls.
I have other larger scrapers for bowls only, but probably not in your area of interest. Most of my scrapers are Henry Taylor and M2 steel. I have a Serious Lathe "long and strong" 1/2" square end scraper, I bought for making pencil holders. Its is .400 thick and made from A2 steel. The range of scrapers I have is from 3/8" to 1 1/2", these cover all my spindle and bowl making needs....now all I need is that really thick 1" half round slant from Serious and I set...until the next "need"..
