>Robert,I would strongly recommend joining your local woodturners club.You will find a fountain of knowladge there.when I joined,I didnt even have a lathe yet.Since joining,I recieved numorous amounts of instruction and advice as you are seeking from world class master turners,and turners that have been turning for as little as a year or two.This,in my opinion is priceless.I have the oneway talon,but others are just as good.Stay with one that has a single key to lock,this being much easier than the two wrench system.Check to see the number of jaws available for that particular chuck.In just the year I been turning I have a 5/8" bowl gouge,radius scraper,spindle gouge,skew,roughing gouge,parting tool just to name a few basic tools.I've turned pens to 8" bowls.As you get into different turnings,bowls,hollow vessles and such,your arsenal of tools will change.Good luck!

I would join an AAW group as soon as you could go to a meeting, someone will surely offer to get you started. Most groups invite demonstrators from time to time. We have Trent Bosch in October.There are a lot of great demonstrators giving classes and demos.

If you use the search function above there is also a lot of stored messages on your questions.

I use a Oneway Stronghold. I have several of their jaws. I think all the chucks you mention are good.

My main bowl gouge is a Sorby �� with a fingernail grind. Wally Dickerman recommended the �� next and I use it a lot for detail work where I do not have to reach too far. I bought the Wolverine to repeat the grind. There is a lot of information on the tool and grinds in the Articles and reviews section to the left.

I like the Vic chucks but any good key chuck will do. Remember that you get what you pay for and don't get junk because it is cheap.

>All of the other advice seems sound. Personally, I would suggest a cheap $36 chuck from Grizzly. Use it until you can figure out for yourself what you really want. Then use the Grizzly for a back-up or second chuck. Sometimes it is really nice to not have to unchuck a piece when you need to do something else before the work is finished.

I have a Jet 1442. I went for the Grizzly and then a Stronghold. I normally like to turn on the large side of what my equipment is capable of. The unfinished bowl on my lathe now is about 15" in diameter (outboard of course).
