I have turned about 6, I got 2 cocobolo blanks first and then made the rest from walnut blanks I cut myself. From what I have seen at Cabelas and BPS, most natural material calls are walnut. I finish mine with Watco and then buff it to desired finish. If it will see real field use, you probably want to leave them matte. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Just some other info that might be of value to you.

You can use just about any tight grained wood that you would like. The more dense the wood the more "bright" the sound. Favorite woods of call makers include cocobolo, osage orange, African blackwood, any of the walnuts, different kinds of burls as long as the voids are filled. Making the barrel from one species and the insert from another species is also popular. Stabilized woods are also becoming popular.

I make separate mandrels for the headstock and the tailstock from dogwood. Cutting and drilling your own blanks will save you a lot of money.

That is a beautiful call. Does cherry make a good call? I've got a few hundred bf of cherry. I also have a lot of walnut. If you are near MS, you are more than welcome to have some.

>If you are using a premade reed, the wood you use for the call makes very little to no difference in the sound. The dense woods mentioned already are very good, but because the are weather resistant and because the work well for making the soundboards as they are hard.

Thanks for the compliment and the offer. I'm in Louisiana but I'm on the west side, almost in Texas. But I would drive for free wood.

About the cherry for a call: I realize you already have it, but I would opt for the walnut. It's just my personal opinion, but I prefer woods with outstanding or very distinctive grain patterns.
