Just some other info that might be of value to you.
You can use just about any tight grained wood that you would like. The more dense the wood the more "bright" the sound. Favorite woods of call makers include cocobolo, osage orange, African blackwood, any of the walnuts, different kinds of burls as long as the voids are filled. Making the barrel from one species and the insert from another species is also popular. Stabilized woods are also becoming popular.
I make separate mandrels for the headstock and the tailstock from dogwood. Cutting and drilling your own blanks will save you a lot of money.
