There are several NM regulars on this board who will undoubtedly have things to say about wood for you. In a previous job I spent a bit of time working in ABQ and it's still one of my favorite cities. This was before I was a woodworker so cannot help you there, but can suggest that you eat as much green chile as you can while there! It's the best. I really liked La Mesa Kitchen for lunch and Gardinio's (I think that was it, it's been a few years) for dinner. If you want to do the "touristy" thing while in town, take the Sandia tram up to Sandia Peak and eat at the High Finance Resturant up there. Food was pretty good, but the tram ride is awesome! Old town is pretty neat to walk around a bit as well. Another "touristy" thing, but pretty neat, is the Owl Cafe on what was old Rt. 66.

Have fun, it's a great town!

Woodworking in Albuquerque

I'm a woodworker and live in Albuquerque.

Albuquerque has several clubs that meet monthly, Rio Grande Wood Carvers, New Mexico Wood Turners, Albuquerque Woodworker Association, and a few smaller clubs I don't attend.

There is also a Woodworkers Supply and Woodcrafters store in Albuquerque.

There are a few Hard wood stores in Albuquerque, Oreac 345-8135 on 5915 Edith use to be a Paxton�s hard wood, good exotic wood store, Albuquerque Hard Woods 344-8856, Hardwood Inc. 247-1000 and a few more.

When do plan on being out here?

All of the clubs welcome people to visit from out of town. A lot of the members are retired and work most times in their shops and you might be able to get an invite.

Three Suggestions:

1. Check out the vendors at the outdoor flea market on the grounds of the Santa Fe Opera -- excellent inspiration for turned forms. The real expensive stuff is in downtown Santa Fe, but the wares at the flea market are just as inspirational, and less expensive, should you buy.

2. Eat at Gabriel's, on the main road between Santa Fe and Los Alamos -- fantastic ! Best guacamole in the universe.

3. Look out for herds of Elk crossing the road at night. I had some close calls on back roads. BTW, they are good eating, too.

Last time I was out there I wasn't tuned into woodturning to the extent I am now -- don't know any great sources for Desert Ironwood, Masquite, etc... My next NM trip will have a different focus, for sure. Beautiful country -- wish I was going !
