The groves are cut with a sharp skew, but one of those very thin parting tools could also be used. There is no glue holding the rings in place. The rings are common plumbing o-rings (Buna-N), purchased through www.allorings.com. The ID of the o-ring's I use run about 70-80% of the OD of the pen, so it�s a tight fit.
The o-rings are rolled onto the upper blank, and into the grove, as part of the final assembly process, after finishing.
