>Hey All,

I am not really a turner, but my 15 year old son got hooked at the 5 barns picnic.

I turn legs as necessary for flat work.

I thought this a good opportunity to get him into this side of it. I purchased a new jet midi, nova chuck and HSS gouges.

Now I need to purchase a pen kit, i.e. mandrel, blanks and anything else you experienced pen turners could throw in.

Could anyone help so I can get him started?

I would like to add as much water to this seed as possible, if you know what I mean...

I could always use help. Is there a complete kit out there that includes blanks, mandrel, pen parts, drill bit and tubes in one neat package?

There are some kits but I think you might be better off buying the individual componenets. I'm assuming you have the lathe, turning tools and a means of sharpening them. So, what you need is:

Mandrel-Must fit your head stock and is usable with all kits. There are some variations between kit manufacturers.

Barrel Trimmer-These come either for one size tube or with several pilot shafts to fit various size tubes. I prefer this one.

Glue-I assume you have this. I prefer polyurathane but others use thick CA or epoxy.

Pen Kit-Most beginners start with Slimline kits. Kits come with all the metal and plastic parts (including the tubes) to assemble the pen.

Pen Blanks-You can buy these but if you have some cherry or walnut scraps, cut the to 3/4"x3/4"x5". Any hard wood will do.

Drill Bit-For the Slimline kits you will need a 7mm bit.
