I don't think there are any solid-material pen kits on the market...all are either silver or gold plated, powder-coat painted, anodized, acid-dyed or acid-washed (allodyne?).

My favorite kit is the Cigar (see photo). These come in black, chrome, satin white and gold...all with superior plating. There are a few kits where the plating will wear with moderately heavy use, like the 24k and colored (red, blue, green) Slimline�s.

If you�re just starting out at pen turning, suggest you not be too concerned with kit quality, and instead, concentrate on developing your own style and experiences by making a few hundred pens, using relatively inexpensive hardware, like the Slimline.

Which Cigar kit do you like the best? I see several resources out there that sells cigar kits, are they all the same (woodcraft, PSI, barehardwoods)?

I believe all the Cigar kits come from Berea, who has them made somewhere in Asia.

Here's another one of my favorites, also with superior plating, sold as the Polaris at PSI and as the Patriot at Craft Supplies...
