Off balance grinding wheels

>A while ago someone spoke of some kind of "balancers" for grinding wheels. I took both the 8 in. wheels off my sears 3450 grindr and it runs as smooth as a Honda outboard. I have not been able to grind down the wheels with the dresser to get rid of the vibration. Can anyone tell me about wheel balancers ?

By the time I bought 1 extra white wheel, the Oneway system with varigrind attachment, wheel truing attachment,skew attachment and now add the cost of wheel balancers I have more invested than I did in my most of the lathes I've bought in the last 10 years. My most expensive lathe up until the Nova 3000 and now the Powermatic was $375.
I like the system but I got buy for many years with a $35 sears grinder and gray wheel.

Out of balance is one thing, out of round is another. I've never had much touble getting a good quality stone to run true without add-on applicances.
With the nuts just snugged up, I rotate the wheels in slight bits until they run as true as possible. The nuts are then fully tightened and the stones are carefully dressed to be dead round as well as flat at the corners and exposed sides. I check round with a dial indicator and manually slowly turning the wheel.
Once my stones have been trued as above, I've never had a problem with them cutting true and evenly.
Your mileage may, however, vary.

Knowing that it is all useless unless the grinder wheels are balanced --- Priceless. :)
To justify getting a set of balancers I will need a bigger grinder. And a bigger lathe. Yeah that's it!!

Well , Sears had this terrific advertisment for an 8 inch grinder, and I should have known, because I have had plenty of Sears junk in the past thirty years. It looks pretty and has all the bells and whistles including a light and a wheel dresser and a shimmy that rattles the vise down at the other end of the bench. I will try all your cheap solutions, and if nothing helps I will spend some more money. It's not my kids inheritance, it's MINE !!

Remove the wheels and run the grinder with the bare shafts. Set a full glass of water on the bench next to the grinder. The water surface should be flat and smooth while the grinder is running. If there are ripples on the water, the problem is the grinder motor, and there is no amount of wheel truing or balancing that will solve the problem. You will either have to exchange or replace the grinder.
