>here's one of the burls I have that I have turned into a box with a natural top. I used my vacuum chuck to hold the burl cap and I think for the first go around, it turned out pretty nice.
I also finished the maple burl with a medium green dye and then put a gold glaze on and finished with 2 coats of dewaxed shelllac, 3 coats of Lac and a beall buff.
Hope you like it and all comments and tips or critiques are welcome.

I like the idea of a box with the natural edge top but it is missing something that I cannot put my finger on. Maybe a smaller foot and have the sides follow more of a curve. It looks very heavy also.
Are the colours right sometimes a picture doesn't complement the turning.
In person it just might look fantastic.

>It appears that it's a little too fat around the middle. Being the first, I didn't realize where to cut the flange, and I didn't want to turn the outside too thin at the join.
Next time I'll be more carefull about the area around the join and make a single angled line down from top to base. Make it more streamlined.
The picture doesn't really do it justice. The color really looks like a deep greenish gold tortise shell. The way the dye penetrated differently based on the grain is very interesting to say the least.
