I heard a rumor from my local Delta rep about a new lathe coming soon....is this it?

I wondered if it might have been the otherway around. That maybe Delta was making the lathe for Woodtec. I don't know but they sure looked similar.

>What happens in most cases is there are only a few main factories in China/Taiwan. They then manufacture for several companies according to their specs and requirements. It was the same in the computer industry. I just got a new IBM notebook computer and it says made in China. One can only hope the specs are up to par.

I work for a company that does alot of outsourcing of product from China. They are two main ways that product is outsourced from China - 1) You look at what they are offering, select it and have them put your name on it; 2) You spec out your product to them, and they manufacture it to your specs.
In option 1: Product can be shabby because it is spec'ed primarily with an eye toward low price. In option 2: If the product is shabby, it is either because you spec'd low, or you are not doing quality control.
I did think that that lathe was "Interesting".

Same with cars and beer.:) We rarely have Q's & A's or discussions about some turning tools and almost daily posts about others. I am not in any way making a value statement, but Woodtek, Vega and Serious come to mind.
We used to think of Japanese products as junk. Not anymore. I guess that if the wages, specs and quality control are high enough, 'Eastern' products can equal or exceed. 'Western'?. Arch

It just happened to be what I needed. Price was right, it will allow up to 24" dia turning, yet the footprint is good for my small shop.

The response was pretty unclear about the lathe they had been showing last year. They told me that the lathe we all saw is the same as the Green and Yellow Woodtek, just painted grey. They were showing it in Orlando to see what the response would be. I told the rep to ask the other guys how their response had been and that would be their answer. I don't think he appreciated my comment.

Here is a question: Would you purchase the same Delta lathe if it were painted yellow and black with a big DeWalt on it? How about an 18-volt cordless mini? :)
