Drill hole first and mount the blank on a mandril so you know the hole is straight between centers (which isn't necessarly the same a the hole being centered and the center of the blank being at the other end).

The mandril should be just a little shorter than the depth of the drilled hole. The mandril can be made from a piece of wood held in a chuck. Make sure the hole end of the handle stock is square to the drilled hole (not necessarly square to the handle stock.)

As Mark said, first You drill the hole and then turn the handle. I use a cone live center on the side where the hole is. I then use a cut piece of brass pipe about an inch long for the ferule. I first turn a tenon on the side with the hole to match the internal diameter of the ferule. I then immedeatly put on the ferule and continue to turn the handle. This will help the hole end of the handle to keep from splitting.

Usually I turn the handle and put on the ferule. Then I put the drill chuck in the headstock and fit it with an appropriate diameter bit. I remove the live center from the tailstock, mount the tip of the end of the handle in the hole in the tailstock ram, align the dril bit with the spurcenter mounting hole, turn on the lathe, and advance the ram until I reach the desired depth. I have never had any problems with the hole not being straight when I use this method.

However, all the others responses will work just as well.

>Thanks Jean I found it and e-mailed it too him. It did remind me that I built a tool handle and photographed the steps so I need to get on the ball and put the photos with the article. I'll try to do that in the next week or so and see if they want it on wood central.
